The flies literally fall down the Sarracenia''s throat. The nectar scent emanating from the tubes attracts the insects to the entrance of the trap. Taking nectar from the smooth inside of the tube, they slide down into the trap and eventually drown in the digestive fluid. Several species go dormant during the winter months. The hose plants flower in early spring. Their flower has a particularly intense scent.

Because they are hardy down to about -15° C, they are suitable for outdoors - in the full-sun shore area of a pond or a bog bed.

These tubular plants can grow up to 70cm tall, which is why you should repot them often. Especially the large plants need a lot of water in the summer months.
