In their natural habitats, the rock and scree deserts of South-West Africa, these little plants mimic their surroundings: the stones. Thus, they are so well hidden that they are not found of animals that want their most valuable: the stored water in their fleshy leaves. Thats's why they are difficult to discover
Only once a year entire fields of Lithops blossom at the same time and form a fascinating sea of flowers.
By the way: Lithops have only 2 leaves. Maximum of 2 times per year they grow a new pair. Then the old pair dies and serves as a natural fertilizer and water storage for the new leaf generation.
