Elegant, hardy ornamental grass - Hakonechloa macra
Hakonechloa macra, also known as Japanese forest grass, Japanese mountain grass or Japanese dwarf reed, is an exceptionally elegant ornamental grass with curved, light green leaves that turn a bright golden yellow in autumn. Its gently overhanging growth habit brings a soft, flowing structure to the garden and creates a harmonious look in shady to semi-shady areas.
Hakonechloa macra is hardy, but needs protection from heavy frosts during the growth phase. It thrives in humus-rich, well-drained soil with even moisture and is ideal as a ground cover, for woodland edges, rock gardens or for planting in containers. Pruning in late winter or early spring encourages fresh growth and maintains the supple growth habit.
